Mazibuko’s Heidelberg Hospital visit puts community participation in healthcare governance in focus

Strengthening community participation in healthcare governance was a key focus during Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Faith Mazibuko’s visit to Heidelberg Hospital on September 2.
The visit brought together hospital management, members of the Heidelberg Hospital Board, and community stakeholders to strengthen relations and improve communication on healthcare matters affecting residents.
A central focus of the engagement was bridging the gap between the hospital board and the community, creating space for greater participation and collaboration in addressing local healthcare priorities.
Mazibuko emphasised the importance of communities being actively involved in discussions about healthcare services and governance.
“Healthcare cannot be strengthened by government and hospital management alone. We need communities to be part of the conversation, to raise their concerns and to work with our governance structures so that we can better understand and respond to the needs of the people we serve,” she said.
The engagement highlighted the role of Hospital Boards as an important link between healthcare facilities and the communities they serve.
Stronger relationships among hospital management, governance structures, and residents can help identify challenges, improve communication, and develop initiatives that respond to local needs.
The visit also provided an opportunity to encourage open and constructive engagement between stakeholders, particularly on issues affecting the delivery of healthcare services in Heidelberg and surrounding communities.
