Heidelberg residents urged to stay alert after suspicious device reportedly found near gate motor

Heidelberg residents are being urged to remain vigilant following a security warning about a suspicious electronic device allegedly found near an automated gate.

Absolut Security issued the warning after an incident in which a person was reportedly seen placing a small electronic device in bushes near a gate motor.

According to the security company, the person allegedly returned the following morning to retrieve the device, but residents had already removed it.

The device was identified as a portable electronic multi-tool that can interact with certain radio and wireless signals. Some of its functions can interact with Sub-GHz radio frequencies used by certain automated gate and garage-door systems.

The security company said deliberately placing an electronic device close to an entrance could raise concerns about monitoring, analysing, or interfering with signals from gate remotes.

However, the discovery does not in itself confirm that a crime was being committed or that a property’s access system had been compromised.

Residents are advised to watch for unfamiliar electronic devices or objects near gate motors, bushes, gardens, and other areas close to property entrances.

They are also encouraged to report suspicious individuals or vehicles repeatedly monitoring entrances, unexplained activity around access points, unexpected gate activations, and unfamiliar equipment that appears to have been deliberately placed on or near their properties.

Anyone who finds a suspicious device should avoid handling it unnecessarily and contact their security provider or the relevant authorities so that it can be assessed.
