WATCH: Ratanda residents raise water, electricity and unemployment concerns during elections

Ratanda residents used the elections to highlight ongoing service delivery challenges, calling for reliable water and electricity, job opportunities and meaningful improvements in their communities.

Service delivery, persistent water shortages, electricity challenges and unemployment dominated conversations today (November 4) among residents who turned out to vote at Obed Nkosi voting station and Kgoro Ya Thuto Secondary School at Ext 23 in Ratanda.

The concerns come amid ongoing frustration over municipal service delivery in the area, particularly the water crisis that sparked protests in July.

During the July demonstrations, residents took to the streets over prolonged water shortages.

The protests escalated into violent clashes with police, with reports of fatalities and the torching of the Lesedi Local Municipality executive mayor’s home. The unrest brought renewed attention to residents’ demands for reliable access to basic services.

Voters said they hoped the elections would bring meaningful change and that those elected would prioritise the needs of communities.

Nozintombi Mhlambi said improved service delivery remained a priority, adding that residents wanted leaders who would listen to their concerns and address the challenges affecting their daily lives.

“We came out to vote because we want to see change in our communities. Service delivery remains a major concern, and residents are tired of raising the same issues without seeing meaningful improvements. We want leaders who will listen to the people, respond to our concerns and ensure that basic services reach everyone,” she said.

Job Maseko highlighted the challenges of water shortages and electricity.

“Water and electricity are some of the biggest challenges affecting residents. We cannot continue living with water shortages and electricity problems because these are basic services that every household needs. We hope the people elected will take these concerns seriously and work towards finding lasting solutions. Residents should not have to struggle to access essential services,” he said.

Lindiwe Dube raised concerns about unemployment, particularly among young people who continue to struggle to find jobs and economic opportunities.

“Unemployment is a serious concern, especially among young people who are struggling to find jobs and opportunities. We want leaders who will create opportunities for young people, support local development and help improve people’s livelihoods. People need employment to support their families and live with dignity. We hope that our votes will contribute towards a better future for the community,” she said.
