This week I have a confession to make. I’m in possession of something somewhat illegal and have been for quite some time.
I’m not proud of this. I could have rectified the matter months ago. I hope the police can forgive me. I used this “illegal” device on Friday and was amazed to again experience just how well coordinated the fight against crime in Heidelberg is.
There seems to be a good working relationship between Police, the Community Police Forum Patrollers and the local security companies.
The weekend had just started and I nearly fell off my recliner when I heard the following: “A woman tried to commit suicide behind Ice Cold Bodies”.
Let’s back that up. A woman tried to kill herself behind Ice Cold Bodies. There would therefore have been more ice cold bodies in that part of town if she succeeded. I can see the headline “Woman dies behind Ice Cold Bodies.”
For those of you who don’t know, Ice Cold Bodies is a Heidelberg based company that manufactures bodies and trailers for trucks.
The woman was standing on the railway track behind Ice Cold Bodies. A security guard radioed for help and within minutes SAPS, Crime Stop and a few CPF patrollers were at the scene.
Fortunately just as they arrived a man (probably her boyfriend) helped the woman come to her senses. The pair drove off into the sunset and the police and patrollers returned to their posts.
This was not your average break-in where reaction time often saves lives so it was impressive to see with what caution these men and women approached a potentially tragic situation.
I’m tired of being a pirate listener and I therefore promise to go and register the CPF radio that was given to me by a special lady who often dyes her hair purple.
It costs only R100 per year to have access to a network of people who have a direct line to the police.
That’s R12 per month for a link to a few good men (and women) who spend their own time and money to try and make a difference.
Sure, the radio might set you back about R800, but that is a once off payment.
Also, you don’t have to become a patroller when you join the network.
The CPF will teach you how to use your radio in case of an emergency and would like nothing more than to increase the number of eyes and ears they have.
Unless you have a desire to be left in the cold this winter, get a radio. Easy.
