About Highvelder

The Highvelder Newspaper celebrated its centenary (100 years) in August 2003.

Born in 1903 after the town burnt down during the Anglo-Boer War, the Highvelder (or Highveld Herald as it was known back then) had already fostered a close relationship with its community.

It maintained its close relationship with its readers through the wide range of topics and information it shared at that time – from sharing “ouma se melktertresepte”, highlighting the visit by King George and Queen Elizabeth to focusing on the achievements of learners at school-level. When one considers that a 100 years ago the newspaper was sold for a penny, and had an unbelievable circulation of 160 per week, as opposed to its current weekly free distribution of 12 000, it is clear why the Highvelder has secured a close relationship with its community, who will ensure that its future is preserved for generations to come.
