GSDM remembers the Diepvale Five Massacre

The event was held in remembrance of five fallen heroes who were ambushed and killed on 30 September in 1993 as they fought the injustices of the past.

Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) hosted the Diepvale Five Massacre Commemoration event in the Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality in Diepvale, Fernie on Saturday, 6 October.

The event was held in remembrance of five fallen heroes who were ambushed and killed on 30 September in 1993 as they fought the injustices of the past.

The event began with a march led by the Executive Mayor of GSDM, Mr Muzi Chirwa, the Executive Mayor of Chief Albert Luthuli, Mr Dan Nkosi. and various leaders in the area.

The leaders walked from the scene of the ambush to the grave site where the men were laid to rest.

Mr Joshua Nkosi, speaker of GSDM, a survivor of the killing, had the house emotional as he shared the events of the day.

Mr Muzi Chirwa was delighted GSDM was able to bring together the community and the various leaders to commemorate the events of 30 September 1993, stating that moving forward, all fallen heroes from around the Gert Sibande district will soon be remembered and honoured in the same manner.

“This will ensure that the history of the GSDM does not die and that all generations come to know and honour the sacrifices made by those that lost their lives on our behalf,” Mr Chirwa concluded.
