Mother’s Day family-friendly hike and picnic

It’s time to spoil all the beautiful moms out there with a family-friendly hike and picnic with a kiddies’ play area and wildlife scenery.

Details of the event:
Date and Time: May 12, 09:00
Place: Alverstone Wildlife Park

Hike details:
Difficulty: Regular hiker: Grade 1, Casual hiker: Grade 2
Distance: Appr. 5–6km (There is a shorter 2km option for the elderly and families with toddlers.)
Duration: 2–3 hours

Tickets: https://durbanhiking.co.za/book-on-quicket/ They are R199pp (U13 – R99pp). This fee includes an entry fee into Alverstone Wildlife Park, chocolate for all the moms, picnic blankets (limited numbers on a first-come-first-served basis) and also exclusive use of the venue.

What to bring:
 – snacks, water or cold drinks, backpack
– walking shoes/takkies with good grip are a must! No flat shoes allowed! A hiking stick is recommended!
– some snacks and drinks for the picnic. Picnic blankets are provided on a first-come-first-served basis.

A braai will be lit after the hike. (Please bring your own meat and drinks!)

Old Mutual Music at the Lake series 

The highly anticipated Old Mutual Music at the Lake series is back with a special concert in celebration of Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 12. The event will take place at the Durban Botanic Gardens, nestled around the picturesque Lake area.

Music enthusiasts and families alike can look forward to an unforgettable live performance by the legendary Mango Groove, known for their unique sound that blends pop, rock and traditional South African music. In addition, comedian Aaron McIlroy will entertain the audience with his comedic talents, making this concert an unmissable experience for all ages.

Claire Johnston from Mango Groove is excited to return to Durban Botanic Gardens for the concert, saying, “We’re so thrilled to be coming back to this glorious venue for the first time in several years. Mothers’ Day is the perfect opportunity as we get to celebrate love, connection and kindness”.

FLATFOOT Dance Company 21st Birthday Season

Celebrating its 21st birthday, Durban’s award-winning FLATFOOT DANCE COMPANY presents Journey, a short season of contemporary dance that promises to nourish and enrich.

Titled Journey, the season features two new works, one by resident choreographer and artistic director, Lliane Loots, and another by special guest from Madagascar, Gaby Saranouffi. The season not only celebrates the 21-year journey of getting to the milestone, it also delves into the head and heart of what it means to be alive at this point in history.

Journey is at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre for only three performances: May 10 at 19:00 and May 11 at 14:30 and 19:00. Tickets cost R120 – R85 for pensioners, students, scholars and block bookings of 10 or more. Booking via Computicket: https://computicket.com/event/journey/6688047

Enchanting Music by Soprano Suzi Stengel with Andrew Warburton on piano

Friends of Music is excited to announce a recital by internationally acclaimed soprano Suzi Stengel with Andrew Warburton accompanying her on the piano.

Suzi was born in Italy and raised in South Africa as part of the well-known Stengel Family. Her talent quickly gained her recognition, leading to numerous soloist performances both in South Africa and Sydney, Australia, where she now lives.

She is back to collaborate once again with Andrew Warburton, who is acknowledged as one of the finest solo pianists and accompanists in South Africa.

Audiences are invited on a journey through a diverse landscape of music spanning multiple centuries and styles. From the lush Romanticism of Duparc and Liszt to the shimmering impressionism of Debussy and the dramatic operatic arias of Verdi and Bellini, this concert promises to be a feast for the senses.
