Support people with disabilities – take part in fun day at Knowles SPAR

Non-profit Get Inspired invites the community to engage with the disabled people they help as they share what they have made.

THE Get Inspired non-profit organisation invites the community to draw inspiration from them as they will be making an appearance at Pinetown Knowles SPAR on Saturday, September 23.

Founded by Grant Oosthuyzen, the organisation travels throughout Durban, promoting the well-being of people with disabilities.

“This is achieved through skills development programmes and workshops, such as arts and crafts, sports and woodwork. Our programme instils a sense of pride and dignity in the lives of the impaired, and it teaches them general skills, as well as entrepreneurial abilities that may help them in the future.

“The products that they make through our skills development programmes get sold at local markets. A portion of the profit goes to the maker of the product while the difference gets used to buy more materials for the programmes. Get Inspired also goes to disability centres and coaches Boccia – a sport for people with disabilities to play which is similar to bowls and which enables them to compete in competitions and possibly even make the provincial team,” said Oosthuyzen.

Oosthuyzen said the Get Inspired programme brings the disabled community together and empowers them to become more independent.

“It is a stimulating, safe space of togetherness, away from their rehabilitation centres, where people with disabilities can dare to dream and grow as individuals,” he added.

On Saturday, the team will be displaying their work, and the community is invited to meet the Get Inspired team.

“There will be prizes to win, games to play and dancing to take part in. You can even try your hand at a bit of woodwork. Come and learn and get inspired to lend a helping hand to those who see and walk life differently,” he said.
