It is often challenging for LGBTQI models to be cast.

The Miss Gay Thembisa Organisation (MGTO) is paving the way for aspiring LGBTQI models to hit the modeling industry.

MGTO was founded by a local activist, Wonderful Mkhize.

The organisation aims to bring change and make ideology a reality.

The organisation focuses on fighting for equality and respect regarding sexual orientation and gender reassignment.

“It’s vital for residents to know that LGBTQI people and their families exist and that they should be accepted like everybody else.

“Community members should learn this throughout their lives. Not only will this community and its family feel accepted, but it will also prevent bullying in the long run,” said Mkhize.

“Increased knowledge about LGBTQI people leads to lower levels of discomfort towards this community, and thus can reduce discrimination.”

How residents can assist

“Residents can assist us by tolerating, loving and accepting the LGBTQI community, thus creating a happy environment for everyone,” said Mkhize.

“This is why we are involved in the upliftment of our community through helping charities, orphanages and visiting prisons and hospitals. We’ve recently adopted an orphanage called Tshepang in Thembisa.

“Our message to the community is to revive the spirit of ubuntu to give and build our economy. If we help each other, we can build a community that looks out for other people too,” said Mkhize.
