WhatsApp helps trace stolen Blackberry cellphone

SOCIAL media has proven that it goes a longer way than just connecting people and friends over long distances.

This time, a WhatsApp conversation helped trace a Blackberry cellphone which was stolen during a house robbery in Birch Acres.

According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton SAPS, on Saturday at about 8am police received a tip-off from a house robbery victim whose home was robbed on the same day.

“It is alleged the victim was on WhatsApp when it showed that his WhatsApp on his Blackberry cellphone was online, meaning someone was still using his phone,” Mtshali said.

The victim contacted the person using his cellphone and convinced him or her to meet at the Engen garage on CR Swart Drive.

“When he got there, a woman was found to be in possession of the stolen phone. The female suspect was questioned on how she acquired the phone and she said she bought it from another suspect who was later traced to Ivory Park in Tembisa.”

The male suspect could not account for how he acquired the cellphone.

Both the woman and the man were arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen goods.

In a separate incident, two suspects, aged 28 and 29, were arrested on Sunday for an alleged house break-in. Police were called to a house on Blockhouse Street at about 5.30pm where the burglary took place.
