102-year-old grandmother celebrates recovery after hip surgery

At 102 years old, Chrissie Venter has yet another remarkable story to tell after making a successful recovery from hip surgery following a fall.

Venter fell and broke her hip on July 18 while brushing her teeth. She was admitted to Arwyp Medical Centre, where she underwent surgery, and was discharged on July 27.

Despite the traumatic incident, Venter remained calm throughout her ordeal.

According to her granddaughter, Zonnette Theron, she spent the time praying and even comforted her granddaughter, encouraging her not to cry. While in the casualty ward, Venter prayed for her granddaughter.

“We would like to thank each and every person at Arwyp. The doctors explained the high risks associated with surgery at her age before the operation. By God’s grace, she came through the surgery successfully.

“We thank God for answering our prayers. There were tears of joy. Thank you to Ouma’s doctor, Dr F Krog, who assisted before the ambulance arrived, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Nkosi, Dr Marissa Venter, the caring anaesthetist, and all the other doctors and staff for their hugs, support and exceptional care. You all made a meaningful difference during her treatment,” said Theron.

Theron said Venter has since returned to the Council for the Aged at Allen Park, where she is recovering well. She is eating independently, walking with assistance and has already had her hair and pedicure done, just as she always enjoys.

Having recently celebrated her 102nd birthday, Venter’s recovery is a testament to her strength, resilience and positive outlook on life. Theron said her grandmother continues to spend time talking to God and the angels, thanking God for His love and praying for all her children.

She described Venter as a positive, humble and deeply religious woman with a caring personality.

“I am happy and grateful to be back in my happy place with my people. I would like to encourage others to stay hopeful and trust the people who care for you during difficult times. Believe and trust in God. He is our Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He made everything,” said Venter.
