Curro Serengeti held their annual Career Expo

Curro Serengeti hosted a two-day career expo on August 4 and 5, bringing together 73 tertiary institutions and industry experts to help learners explore their options beyond school.

The expo aimed to expose learners to a wide range of tertiary study opportunities and career fields, while giving them the chance to engage directly with professionals and ask questions about their potential career paths.

According to Curro Serengeti marketer Lara de Castro, choosing a career can be one of the most significant decisions a learner makes, and the school wanted to provide learners with access to information and real-world insights to help them make informed choices.

“The expo was inspired by our commitment to preparing learners for success beyond the classroom. We wanted to create an opportunity for learners and their families to engage directly with leading universities, colleges, training institutions, and industry professionals in one convenient setting,” said de Castro.

Exhibitors represented a broad range of sectors, including aviation, engineering, finance, banking, healthcare, emergency medical services, law enforcement, education, hospitality, culinary arts, business management, logistics, sports science, information technology, media, creative arts, fashion and environmental sciences.

Among the participating organisations were First National Bank, Standard Bank, the South African Police Service, Rand Water, Netcare Education Faculty of Emergency and Critical Care and Ernst & Young.

Universities represented included the University of Johannesburg, Wits University, Rhodes University, the University of Pretoria, North-West University and the University of the Free State, alongside private tertiary institutions and specialised training organisations.

The expo was held over two days, with each institution or industry expert given a 20-minute presentation slot. Grade 12 learners from Curro Serengeti, Curro Clayville and Curro Edenvale were able to attend presentations, ask questions and engage with representatives about admission requirements, study options, career pathways and the skills required in different industries.

“The informal setting encouraged meaningful discussions, and many learners took the opportunity to explore career options they had not previously considered,” said de Castro.

The school said learners and teachers responded positively to the event, with learners gaining greater insight into potential study and career options.

Kempton Park SAPS Social Crime Prevention also attended the expo on August 4.

According to Sergeant Ntombifuthi Abrokwa, Kempton Park SAPS Social Crime Prevention coordinator, SAPS, together with People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), distributed information pamphlets on gender-based violence (GBV) and bullying.

“The joint effort demonstrates the stakeholders’ commitment to creating a healthy and safe environment in our community,” said Abrokwa.
