Laurie (13): Proof that big talent comes in small packages
Boarder inspired by Liverpool FC sets sights on basketball and soccer success after switch from hockey.
Nathan Jack Laurie discovered his love for sport at a young age, with soccer being his first passion.
That early love laid the foundation for a broader athletic journey, which now includes basketball and hockey alongside soccer.
His curiosity and drive have never been limited to a single sport code. If anything, they’ve pushed him to explore more.
Growing up in a household where football mattered, Laurie naturally developed a strong affection for Liverpool FC, a passion passed down from his father.
That same influence also introduced him to hockey.
“My father was good at hockey, and at my previous school I played hockey too,” he says.
“But I eventually switched.”
That switch led him into basketball, a sport that challenged him in new ways. During breaks at his old school, friendly games became his training ground. Often the shortest player on the court, Laurie learned quickly that skill had to compensate for size.
“Because everyone was taller than me, I had to work on my handles,” Laurie recalls.
He focused on ball-handling, using speed and control to compete against taller opponents.
That dedication paid off. When the games became competitive, his team played two matches and won both.
Now boarding at Jeppe, Laurie credits the shared environment for strengthening team chemistry and discipline.
Again, his height has shaped his style of play. He continues to refine his handling, using agility and timing to beat defenders.
“I try to beat the player before they can get to me, and then I shoot.”
Looking ahead, Laurie has ambitious goals.
He dreams of playing professionally in both basketball and soccer, a challenging path, but one he approaches with focus, humility, and belief.
“I would like to play professionally in both basketball and soccer,” said Laurie.
It’s a bold goal, but one that fits a young athlete who has already learned how to turn limitations into strengths.
