Hello Spring

Enjoy the spring sunshine

Spring has sprung and there is much to do this season.
Things to keep in mind are keeping your pets cool, getting your car spring ready and, of course, enjoying those spring braais.

Pets
Pets can dehydrate quickly so ensuring that they have cool, clean fresh water is essential during the upcoming months.
Ensure that your pets have plenty of shady spots outside and, if indoors, that they are in well ventilated rooms.
Animals with flat faces, such as Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively.
These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.

Car maintenance
Check your owner’s manual as this will specify how frequently your car should be serviced and the most important components and systems for checking.
For older cars, an oil and filter change is necessary every six months or 10 000km at an absolute minimum.
Of course, if you notice that your car is underperforming, this is a sign that attention is necessary.
The requirements for your car’s service will really depend on the make, model and any obvious problems.

Braai
When you are having a braai, it is always good to have some delicious snacks to eat while waiting for your meat.
Here are a few tips for snacks around the braai:
• Marinate your own olives. Buy the plain olives at your local supermarket. Drain them and then add fresh thyme, chilli chopped very finely and lemon zest mixed with a little olive oil. Leave for an hour.
• Spicy, caramelised nuts make great snacks. Take a couple of handfuls of nuts: almonds, pecans and brazils. Place a little butter in a pan and add a teaspoon of sesame seeds and a teaspoon of dried coriander. Fry gently and then add the nuts, allowing them to become coated with the spice. Add a tablespoon of honey and cook until the honey caramelises. Cool on a sheet of greaseproof paper and serve cooled.
• Slice droëwors and pile onto a platter interspersed with sprigs of fresh rosemary.
• Make sure you choose things that are easily prepared in advance, leaving you some time to mingle with your guests and give the impression you are well organised.
