Ndebele scooped the first prize

A grade 12 learner, Praise Ndebele of Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School at Kaalfontein was announced as the winner of the 2013 National SAICA Sage Pastel Accounting Olympiad.

Ndebele (17), who has set his sights on becoming a Chartered Accountant scooped the first prize for being the best learner with a 92% mark and walked away with an Apple I Pad and cash.

“I am so excited. The hard work paid off. I love working with figuresbut it took a lot of practice to achieve this award. I am speechless,” said Ndebele.

Ndebele, the third child among his five siblings has the privilege of having his mother, Cynthia Landile Magubane, who is the senior accounting teacher at the school as his mentor. His mother received a cash prize of R5000 as the teacher of the winning learner.

The only grade 12 accounting teacher at Oracle Secondary School, Magubane said that her son enjoys reading and has keen balance between reading novels as well as doing research.

“I am grateful that after entering the Olympiad for the first time, my learner won the national award. Learners from my school come frompoor family and need this kind of initiatives so that they can become better people,” she said.

Meanwhile, the principal of the school, Nico Leso, said that Ndebele is a highly gifted child and a natural hard worker.

“He is a learner with the right focus who is bound to reach greater heights. He has also displayed great leadership potential at the school. I am pleased to have him as one my learner,” she added.

The project director for transformation, growth and professional development at SAICA, Gugu Makhaya, said that this year’s accounting Olympiad attracted 4 465 grade 11 and 12 learners from 338 schools across the country.

“The enthusiastic participation can be attributed to the fact that more learners and educators are beggining to appreciate the impact that the Olympiad has on improving accounting skills,” he said.

He added that the main objective of the Accounting Olympiad is to recognise young accounting talent and encourage interest in accountancy on high school level.

Sage Pastel Accounting Marketing Manager Joanne Van Der Walt said that they are delighted with the increasing number of participantsand they hope it will help to grow the competition in ensuing years.

Makhanya and Van Der Walt congratulated the learners and educators who participated and supported the 2013 Olympiad.
