Safe with counterfeit ‘money’ found at school

The police will conduct an investigation as well as forensic tests on the notes

A safe with what is suspected to be counterfeit money was found during a search at Rhodesfield Technical High School on September 19.

The safe was found in one of the classrooms when police members, the youth desk, K9 unit and metro police visited schools in Kempton Park to conduct searches initiated by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety.

Learners were thoroughly searched for weapons, drugs and cigarettes during the visit and dogs were also used.

“While searching one of the classrooms a bag containing a safe was found. When opened the safe contained papers in paperclips with papers with the same dimensions as bank notes. We believe these ‘notes’ are commonly used in scams where people are lured into believing their cash will be doubled and they are then robbed,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton Park SAPS spokesman.

The police will conduct an investigation as well as forensic tests on the notes to establish how the bag containing the safe came to be in the classroom.

Police also recovered a small packet of dagga mixed with tobacco.
