Pedestrian airlifted after being struck by car
The man was airlifted from to a Johannesburg hospital for further care
A critically injured pedestrian was airlifted to hospital on Saturday evening after being struck by a car underneath the Olifantsfontein Road bridge on the R21. Santi Steinmann, Netcare 911 spokesman, said the highway was closed off for all traffic in both directions and re-opened after the Netcare1 helicopter was airborne from the scene. Werner Vermaak, ER24 spokesman, said paramedics found the man in his thirties lying in the outer right lane of the highway. Members of the SAPS North Rand Flying Squad had kept the man safe from passing vehicles prior to the arrival of paramedics. Immediately paramedics assessed the man and found that he had suffered extensive injuries and was in a serious condition. While the man was being stabilised, a medical helicopter was called to the scene. The man was airlifted from to a Johannesburg hospital for further care. “The driver and occupants of the car were not injured. A big thank you to the police and other services for their assistance on the scene,” Vermaak said.
