‘My bus is not illegal’
The driver of the school bus said all his paperwork was in order and the EMPD had since confirmed it was
“MY bus is not illegal.”
These were the words of Fanyana Nkosi (52), the driver and owner of the Toyota school bus which was reportedly sought by the metro police for not having a clearance certificate.
Furthermore, the driver was also accused of passing traffic on the left hand side while driving on the R25 and a photograph was sent in by a motorist to confirm the allegation.
“When I saw the story in the paper I had already had some parents calling and pulling their children out of my transport service,” he said.
The Tembisa resident explained that the day the photograph was taken, he had been repairing the vehicle on the side of the road.
“The bus got stuck and when I checked, I discovered that I had to fix the air lock which was what I was doing on the side of the R25.
“When I was trying to move back into traffic to take the children to school via Mooirivier Drive, I had to move into traffic from the left hand side and that was when the photograph was probably taken,” he explained.
Metro police spokesman, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, confirmed that the driver was stopped last week Monday and after a thorough inspection of the bus, the only defect that was found was one of the tyres.
As this is his only livelihood, Nkosi hopes that parents will realise that the error was on the metro police’s side and that his paperwork is in order.
“I have applied for the necessary paperwork needed for my bus to be valid to transport schoolchildren and am waiting for the traffic department to send the documents to me,” he added.
Kgasago explained that upon inspection, the disc on the vehicle may have been misread and the conclusion made that the clearance certificate had expired.
“I have been in this business for many years and I would not do anything illegal to endanger the lives of the children I transport, as well as jeopardise my business,” added Nkosi.
