According to the EMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, the Peace Corps alerted the Crime Prevention Unit about a scrap metal dealership in Mayibuye section, which had the aluminium and copper.
“Approximately 200 kilogrammes of various metals were seized,” he said.
Chief Supt Kgasago said the Crime Prevention Unit monitored the dealership from 9am before launching their operation at around 12-noon.
“The officers found metal stolen form hawkers’ stalls, a large quantity of medical forceps, 128 kilogrammes of copper and numerous large screws and bolts, which are normally used on railway sleepers. Taps were also confiscated from the same scrap metal dealership in Mayibuye.,” he added.
The 38-year-old scrap metal dealership owner and his two workers, aged 37 and 43, were arrested and charged at the Rabie Ridge SAPS. The suspects were charged with possession of suspected stolen property.
The three suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon.
