Tembisa loses founding teacher
Mrs Winnie Kekana, known to many in Tembisa as Mmane Winnie, died after a short illness on July 25.

Mrs Kekana started teaching in Tembisa in the early 1960s. She taught at the first primary school in Tembisa, now known as Marulana, before moving to Sedibeng Primary School.
She later moved to Tlamatlama Primary School where she was appointed as the school principal. She worked there until her retirement in 2000.
She was married to the late Mr “Oom K” Kekana, who was also one of the founding teachers of Tembisa High and Boitumelong Secondary Schools respectively.
The products of Mrs Kekana’s teaching career includes politicians, pastors, medical professionals, business leaders and teachers.
She was a members of the Lutheran Evangelical Church and also a staunch SADTU member during her teaching days.
She participated in many community projects and programmes until her final days. She leaves behind three daughters, a son, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs Kekana will be buried at the Mooifontain Cemetery on Saturday, August 2.
The church service will start at 9am at the Lutheran Evangelical Church in Moriting Section.
Her son, Mr China Keklan said, “The family thanks and commends the Tembbisa Hospital staff, especially those in ward 15 where “mama Winnie” was admitted. They acted professionally, especially Drs Craig and Dolo, ward sister Mokgadi and other ward team members. Keep up the good work in uplifting the name of the hospital,” he said.
