Demonstrators call for safer, drug-free Kempton Park

Members of various ANC branches in Kempton Park gathered on June 12 for a march calling for a safer, drug-free community.

Members of various ANC branches in Kempton Park gathered on June 12 for a march calling for a safer, drug-free community.

The demonstration, which drew a large crowd of supporters, was organised in response to concerns about crime and substance abuse in the area.

The predominantly female group marched to several government institutions, including the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Labour and the Kempton Park SAPS station, where a memorandum was handed over.

ANC Kempton Park Women’s League leader Liliwe Mlilwana said the march was motivated by growing frustration over crime and social challenges affecting local communities.

Mlilwana described Kempton Park as a strategically important area due to its proximity to OR Tambo International Airport and alleged that criminal activity in the area had increased in recent years.

She further alleged that government departments and law enforcement agencies were not doing enough to address issues such as drug trafficking, crime and illegal activities.

“We are tired of the issue of drugs, hijacked buildings and crime. Our children and families are suffering, and as residents we are raising our voices because if we do not fight for our community, no one will,” said Mlilwana.

ANC Ward 16 leader Siphamandla Ndawonde said he hoped young people would benefit from future opportunities if crime and drug-related activities were reduced.

“We need the youth to be prepared for the opportunities that will come once the area is free from drugs and criminal activities. We want young people to have the opportunity to participate in business and contribute positively to the local economy,” said Ndawonde.

During the demonstration, participants also raised concerns about policing and law enforcement, calling for stronger action against crime and drug-related offences.
