Cop gunned down in Pretoria Rd robbery: R100 000 reward offered

The robbers escaped with R5 000, 30 cartons of cigarettes and airtime

A reward of more than R100 000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspects who shot and killed a Tembisa policeman on Monday evening.

Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesman for Kempton Park SAPS, could not confirm the exact amount. He said on Tuesday morning the cluster commander, Maj Genl Vincent Leshabane, is offering the reward to help track down and arrest the perpetrators.

This comes after a 48-year-old off duty Tembisa detective in private clothes was gunned down in a supermarket and butchery shop on Pretoria Road on Monday evening.

Three armed men entered the establishment at about 6.30pm. The officer, stationed at Tembisa Police Station, confronted the men when they demanded money.

Capt Doniah Mothutsane, a police spokesman, said the victim was hit four times, twice in the stomach and twice in the leg. He died on the scene.

The robbers escaped with R5 000 cash, 30 cartons of cigarettes and airtime.

A case of murder has been opened with Kempton Park SAPS.

The policeman’s name cannot be released at this stage.
