Women taught self defence

The Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Ivory Park celebrated Women's Day in style when they invited martial arts practitioners to teach women self defence.

They invited local martial arts gurus Sensei Cass Sehlotto and Sensei Moses Sebopa.

Sensei Sethlottlo said in order to defend themselves, residents must always make sure their homes are secured.

“Talk to your neighbours, keep a distance from strangers and always check what is happening around you,” he said.

After going through some demonstrations, he asked women to participate in some of the defensive strategies.

Bishop Stanley Mathews and his wife, Sharon, also participated in the demonstrations.

When asked about the idea of teaching women defensive strategies, especially on Women’s Day, Bishop Mathews said it is important for women to be free of the social ills and abuses they encounter all the time.

“It is our duty as men to protect and take care of women. That is the reason for inviting martial arts practitioners to share their knowledge with them. It feels good that we are using this important day to empower women,” he said.

Women from as fas as Lesotho and Mozambique attended the annual Women Conference and Crusade and participated in the self defence strategies.
