SAPS continues raising awareness

The policewomen of the SAPS Tembisa Cluster handed out pamphlets on crime awareness and how to keep safe

POLICEWOMEN of the SAPS Tembisa Cluster handed out crime awareness and how to keep safe pamphlets to motorists at various traffic light intersections on Friday.

Lt Col Tintswalo Banyini, who headed up the crime awareness campaign, said it was important for people, both men and women, to be aware of everyday crimes that occur and to be educated on how to avoid them or what to do if in the middle of a dangerous incident.

“It is vital for people to be aware of crime. Small things such as not keeping valuables on car seats can help avoid smash and grabs and for pedestrians, changing direction and walking towards a police station if one feels that they are being followed by a stranger can help avoid danger.

“And since it is still Women’s Month, it is imperative that women are educated about safety and how to keep themselves safe and protected.”

The women stood at various intersections around Kempton and handed out pamphlets in Birchleigh North, Norkem Park, CR Swart Drive and Kelvin Street, as well as CR Swart Drive and Pretoria Road.

The leaflets included tips on crimes such as robbery with a firearm or weapon, criminals who follow victims home from abank or ATM, robberies that occur under bridges and isolated areas, smash and grab incidents, general safety on the street as well as at home.

The brochure also includes a list of useful emergency numbers.
