One student, one tablet

When addressing pupils at Ikusasa Secondary School on Friday last week, the MEC for Education in Gauteng, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, brought the house down when he said every pupil at the school will receive a tablet device when the school open next year.

“Ikusasa is one of the five schools I have adopted in Gauteng. I will make sure that when schools re-open next year, every teacher will have a laptop and every pupil will have a tablet. Gone are the days when teachers spent weeks marking books while pupils had to wait days before knowing how they performed. Pupils will write tests using tablets and they will get their results immediately,” he said.

The MEC did, however, warn that the laptops and tablet devices are for educational purposes only.

He also called on the pupils to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

“Once you touch nyaope, you kiss your career goodbye,” he said.

But when he said pupils should stay away from alcohol, there were some mumbles from some of the pupils in the back row. The MEC could see there was some discontent.

“Let me advise you, when you touch alcohol, you start some ye-ye (associating) with boys and that results in unplanned pregnancy and a bleak future. I love you very much, and I will do whatever it takes to make sure you get an education and become future, educated leaders,” he said.
