Man followed from bank and shot in the leg in armed robbery

He was followed from Glen Marais by two Toyota Tazz vehicles which cornered him at an intersection in Bredell

A man was wounded in his right leg and robbed of R35 000 on Wednesday afternoon after being followed from a bank where he had withdrawn money.

The victim, who did not want to be named, was on his way to work in Bredell after withdrawing the money in Glen Marais when he was cornered by two Toyota Tazz cars, at about 2pm.

Speaking to EXPRESS shortly after the incident, he said: “As I was driving along Serengeti Boulevard, approaching a stop sign, I noticed a white Tazz driving behind me. I didn’t pay much attention to it.

“A blue Toyota Tazz was also approaching the stop sign at the same time, coming from the left along First Road. I stopped for the blue Tazz to pass. After it did, I turned right into First Road in the direction of the blue vehicle,” the victim recalled.

The blue Tazz made a sudden U-turn in the victim’s direction and two men got out. In the meantime, the victim tried to reverse away from them but was blocked from behind by the white Tazz.

“One of the men from the blue Tazz had a gun and just started shooting at me. One of the bullets hit me in the right leg.”

The bullet was shot through the driver’s side of the car and went through his upper leg, grazing his flesh and landing on his seat.

“At that point they could see I had given up. They took the money, which was in a laptop sort of bag, my car keys and left the scene.”

From the scene of the shooting the victim walked to his workplace, which was not far away, and informed his employers of what had happened. The police were called and arrived at the scene at about 3.30pm.

The metro police and private security vehicles were already on the scene when EXPRESS got there.

The victim was treated at his workplace as he was not too badly hurt as could still walk on the leg.

He said it was still very painful.
