The Winnie Mandela Library was allegedly torched by members of the community on Sunday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses, who refused to reveal their identity, said angry people stormed out of a public meeting and started throwing stones at the Winnie Mandela Clinic.
“I don’t know what they were talking about in the meeting, but they looked angry. Some of the people blocked the road with stones while others started throwing stones at the building. Within minutes, I saw black smoke coming out of the library, and I realised the library was burning,” said one of the eyewitnesses.
Sources within the community said the angry crowd was targeting all the newly-built buildings in Winnie Mandela.
“People are angry because instead of building houses for the poor, they are building new buildings in order to give their friends jobs,” said one resident.
When the SAPS and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) arrived at the scene, the angry crowd had already disappeared.

The Tembisa Cluster communications director, Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha, said the police opened a case of arson and malicious damage to property.
According to Capt Ralidzhivha, police investigations are continuing.
