Owner looks on as his pitbull attacks man (64) and his poodle

The pitbull 's owner just looked on as his dog attacked the man and his dog

A 64-year-old dog owner and his dogs were viciously attacked by a pitbull in Van Riebeeck Park on Wednesday last week while the pitbull’s owner just looked on.

Quentin McCullough sustained bite marks to his arms in his attempt to get the animal off his pet.

During the incident, a number of people stopped to try and give McCullough assistance, except the owner of the pitbull, who just stood and watched the attack.

“I recall shouting at him, imploring him for help but he did nothing to assist me. I am not sure how the young man, who came to my assistance, subdued the animal. I had a brief chat to him afterwards but I was too traumatised to get his name,” McCullough said.

The 64-year-old was walking his two dogs, a black poodle and tan labrador, along the pavement of a church on Drakensberg Avenue at about 5.50pm.

“The pitbull, or perhaps a mixed breed type dog, escaped through the gate at a house on Drakensberg Avenue and headed towards me and immediately attacked the poodle. The labrador came to the poodle’s assistance but I managed to remove her from the scuffle and away from the scene. “I intervened by trying to kick the pitbull,” McCullough recalled.

But his efforts were unsuccessful as the pitbull had already gripped the poodle firmly in its mouth.

“I grabbed the pitbull and pulled it away. While doing that it started attacking me, going for my neck. I fell backwards, hurting my back in the process. The pitbull then grabbed the poodle again. I again grabbed the dog and managed to hold it down. However, this attempt did not succeed and the pitbull attacked me and bit me, causing severe bite marks on my arms.”

Luckily, a young man who was passing in his car stopped to help McCullough and his dogs. He managed to pull the pitbull away. McCullough understood he was also bitten.

McCullough was also assisted by a young woman, Natasha Greyvenstein, who took the poodle into her care.

COPS Security arranged for a medical team to dress his wounds, while a woman from the church brought towels and antiseptic water to assist in cleaning the wounds.

“I would like to thank the young man who helped me personally and find out how he is doing. I would also like to thank all the people who came to my assistance.”

McCullough requests this young man to contact him on mac@macanalysis.co.za

“What concerns me the most is that this pitbull could have attacked a defenceless little child, or even an adult, and killed them. My own dog could have been killed. When I approached the owner on Saturday and asked him if the dog had been given injections for rabies, he failed to give me a clear answer.”

EXPRESS tried to contact the owner of the pitbull but could not reach him.
