Burying the chalkboard

South Africa's Deputy President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa has called on grade 9 pupils at Boitumelong Secondary School to grab the opportunity presented to them by the Department of Education.

He said pupils should empower themselves with valuable information that will benefit them in the future.

Deputy President Ramaphosa was addressing pupils and members of the community after officially opening the Big Switch On Project on Wednesday.

“Grab this opportunity and strive for more information in your studies. You are privileged to be the first pupils to move into digital transformation and I hope you are going to grab this opportunity with both hands,” he said.

He also thanked the MEC for Education in Gauteng, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, for working tirelessly to make sure his dream of transforming the standard of learning in Gauteng is realised.

“Let me also take this opportunity to thank the Premier of Gauteng, Mr David Makhura, for his inspiration in whatever he does, and the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshega, for allowing Mr Lesufi to forge ahead with his inspiring project,” he said.

MEC Lesufi had both the deputy president and the minister of education laughing when he said, “The time for blaming the government for failing to deliver textbooks is over. Perhaps you can blame me for failing to download,” he said.

“Today we have finally buried the chalkboard in Gauteng,” he said.
