Shoddy classrooms shocks councillor

The DA congratulated Chloorkop Primary School on the progress made at the school, especially since the number of pupils at the school has risen 1034.

The DA was, however, appalled by the conditions of some of the classrooms at the school.

The Department of Basic Education recently delivered an additional three mobile classrooms in order to accommodate the growing number of pupils.

The school now has 26 teachers and one teacher paid for by the School Governing Board.

The school is fortunate that 90 percent of the parents are paying the school fees, which are R380 per month for 10 months.

In addition, the department has given the school a R471 170 budget for the year.

“Of concern to the DA is that the school does not have enough toilets,” said Clr Allan Sauls.

He said according to the department’s own minimum norms and standards, a school with the number of pupils like at Chloorkop Primary, has should have 12 toilets for the girls, six toilets for the boys and a further six urinals. Currently, there are only six toilets for girls and six toilets for boys, with one urinal.

“The girls have a shortfall of 50 percent for toilets and the boys are short 83 percent of the urinals needed,” said Clr Sauls.

He added that two class rooms are so dilapidated the school cannot use them. Staff had to move the children to other classrooms.

“The school still has 14 asbestos classrooms, which poses a potential health risk. The department needs to replace all these classrooms as a matter of urgency,” he said.
