According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, the victim was walking along a street in Ivory Park, Extension 13.
She was heading towards Ivory Park Extension 11 when she came across the alleged prophet.
“It is believed she was first approached by an African male who identified himself as a police officer. After a few minutes, she then met with the bogus prophet. It is claimed the bogus prophet started to tell the victim about things happening in her life. The bogus prophet claimed he could pray for her in a private place,” said W/O Sekgobela.
They used a VW vehicle, which was driven by the suspect who had identified himself as a police officer.
The victim was driven to a house in the next street where a lady opened the door for them.
The prophet then asked for permission to use the bathroom for prayer. The request was granted.
W/O Sekgobela said the prophet asked the victim to leave all her belongings inside the car before they could enter the bathroom.
“They entered and started praying. That was when the bogus prophet allegedly raped the victim. After the incident, the prophet left the victim and fled with her belongings,” said W/O Sekgobela.
The 58-year-old suspect was later detained by the Ivory Park SAPS.
He is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape and robbery.
