EMPD targets unsafe pedestrian crossings on R59 and R21
A road safety operation along the R59 and R21 freeways resulted in 20 pedestrians being apprehended for crossing unlawfully in the Germiston and Kempton Park areas.
EMPD Overload and Speed Unit officers conducted a pedestrian safety operation along the R59 and R21 freeways on October 23.
The dangers posed by pedestrians crossing freeways unlawfully in the Germiston and Kempton Park areas were addressed.
“As Transport Month continues to highlight the importance of road safety and responsible road use, the EMPD is intensifying efforts to discourage unsafe pedestrian behaviour and promote compliance with road traffic regulations,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa.

According to Thepa, 20 pedestrians were apprehended during the operation for crossing the freeway unsafely, in contravention of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.

Thepa said these pedestrians were released with a warning at the Germiston Police Station.
She said the operation forms part of the EMPD’s Transport Month initiatives, which seek to raise awareness about road safety, encourage responsible behaviour among all road users and reduce the risk of preventable crashes.
