Primary school teacher busted with drugs gets bail

The metro police made the arrests in the Brakpan CBD

A primary school teacher from a school in Elsburg, Germiston, along with five Nigerians, were arrested in Brakpan on Saturday in connection with drug possession and dealing.

The 41-year-old teacher, who was allegedly caught red-handed buying drugs, had been released on R500 bail in Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesman for Brakpan Police Station, said one of the foreign nationals was also released on R500 bail. The case was postponed to Friday, March 20.

The case against four other Nigerian men was not placed on the court roll and they were released.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgsago, metro police spokesman, said Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s Germiston Crime Prevention Unit acted on a tip off. The Nigerians were arrested for possession and dealing in illicit substances while the teacher was taken in on possession. The arrest took place at 9.30am.While combing the Brakpan CBD, the metro police members noticed two vehicles parked on Hendrik Potgieter Street, a silver Daewoo sedan parked very close behind a silver Ford Figo, Kgasago said.

“The former had two male occupants and the latter only the driver. The metro police’s patience paid off when they eventually witnessed an exchange taking place between the passenger in the Daewoo and the driver of the Ford Figo. The officers arrested the three men for being in possession of four small packets of Cat.

“At the two Nigerians’ residence on Queen Street, three additional suspects were arrested when the metro police uncovered more drugs hidden in the kitchen cupboards. On the whole, six crystal meth and 33 Cat in small plastic packets were confiscated. The value of the drugs is estimated to be R10 000 in the street.”

The five Nigerians, whose ages range between 24 and 29, were charged with possession and dealing in drugs while the 41-year-old educator will face a charge of possession of an illicit substance. The charges were registered at Brakpan Police Station.
