Storm water drain collapses

The stormwater drain started sinking in slowly last year, then finally collapsed about two weeks ago

LITTLE has been done to fix a storm water drain which has collapsed weeks ago on Bamboo Street and Palmiet Avenue.

The collapsed drain left a massive hole on the corner of the two streets, which poses a great danger for the community.

According to ward councillor Jaco Terblanche, the incident had been reported to the metro a few times but nothing has been done about it.

“I first reported the problem in August or September last year as a pothole because that was what I first thought it was. I reported it again in January,” Terblanche explained.

“But a few weeks ago when I went to check up on the problem and saw it had fallen in, I realised it was actually a storm water drain that had collapsed completely.”

Terblanche said he contacted the metro the same day.

“Their reply was they had make the drain safe to be fixed at a later stage. But until today nothing has been done about it. Last I spoke to them was on February 12 when they made another empty promise.”

At first the damage looked like a massive sinkhole and residents thought so too, because there was a smaller sinkhole next to the drain which had opened a few years ago and only covered in 2013.

“With the hole being right at the corner of the two streets, some drivers turning can hardly see it. This is especially the case at night time when it’s dark and less visible. “The only thing that helps is that most people who use these streets are from around here and know about it.”

Whereas the previous hole was less than a meter wide, the current one is larger than a meter in diameter and is so deep an average sized adult can stand inside and have his head only slightly visible.

All the underground piping can be seen from the outside and you can also hear the underground water moving.

Litter has also started to gather up inside he hole.
