Glen Marais shootout: guard is stable in hospital

The empty truck was later found dumped in Bredell

KEMPTON detectives are investigating a case of attempted murder and truck hijacking following the shooting of a security guard on Friday afternoon shortly before 1pm.

An eight-ton truck transporting electronic goods from OR Tambo Airport to a warehouse was hijacked on the R23 at Erasmus Farm in Glen Marais. The truck was being escorted by G4S Security.

Police spokesman, Capt Jethro Mtshali, confirmed that four armed suspects allegedly carrying rifles hijacked the truck and dragged the driver out of the vehicle.

“A shoot-out ensued at about 12.50pm between security guards and the suspects, resulting in one of the guards being shot and injured in the upper body,” Mtshali said.

According to Russel Meiring of ER24 a second person was also injured.

He said ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene and found both patients on the side of the road. One of the patients was in a critical condition after he sustained a gunshot wound to his chest.

Paramedics began their treatment of the patient, providing him with advanced life support to stabilise his vital signs. Once treated, he was airlifted by Netcare’s medical helicopter to a private hospital.

Mtshali said the driver of the truck was treated for trauma and transported by ambulance to Arwyp for further treatment.

Mtshali said the injured security guard was in a stable condition in hospital at the time of going to print.

The police later traced and located the truck in Bredell with the goods already removed the truck.

The value of the goods, which included cell phones and laptops, is unknown.

The police appeal to anyone with information to contact them on 0860010111 or send an SMS to crime line 32211.
