Strollathon for kids with disabilities at Dries Niemandt on Saturday
The strollathon is an awareness campaign for people and children living with disabilities
SPECIAL Paeds and Asante Stewart Foundation will be hosting its first annual strollathon at Dries Niemandt Park on Saturday morning, March 21.
The strollathon is a walk for people and children in wheelchairs, prams and buggies and serves as an awareness campaign for those living with mental and physical disabilities.
The event was initiated by Fikile Zwane, a mother who had a passion for helping other parents who have children with disabilities.
“March 21 also happens to be World Down Syndrome Day, so we are inviting all people, abled and disabled, to join in the walk in support for this cause,” Zwane said.
The theme for the “walk on wheels” is “Pimp My Ride” and there will also be a competition on the day for the best decorated or most creative pram, stroller or wheelchair, where the winner will walk away with a fantastic prize.
There will be prizes for first, second and third (walkers and wheelers) to reach the finish line.
“Just bring your picnic blanket and picnic basket and enjoy with other families facing your challenges and your joys because there will be fun activities for the whole family.”
There will be a 3km walk for children and people in prams, strollers and wheelchairs and a 5km walk for able bodies.
The event will be between 8am and 10am. Registration starts at 8am, the walk will be from 9am until 10am and the rest of the day will be the picnic and entertainment.
The cost is R50 for adults and children above 12 years and children under 12 years pay R20. A t-shirt and cap/hat will cost R50 extra.
