266 Residents evicted from Friendship Town

Over 266 residents were left homeless after most of them had not paid rent in nine months.

More than 266 residents of the Friendship Town Lethabong Complex were evicted on Monday, April 6.

The residents allegedly failed to pay rent since August last year.

It is claimed the eviction took place while several of residents were still at work.

There are also claims that residents’ belongings were thrown onto the street outside the complex. As a result, some people stole the items that were placed outside.

According to one of the residents who was evicted, Mr Andile Ndlove, he was not at home when he was called by his neighbours. He was told to come home to protect his belongings which had been thrown outside.

“I am not happy with how we were evicted because we were not served with a notice,” he said.

Mr Ndlove said he found that most of his property was stolen, including a case containing R35 000.

The father of a six-year-old child, Mr Ndlove said that his family had to use their car as a place to sleep for the night.

“This situation is painful. Seeing your family, including a toddler, with no shelter is difficult,” he said.

The Rabie Ridge SAPS spokesperson, Constable Jacob Nhlongo, confirmed that a case of theft was opened at the police station.
