EMPD increases security ahead of planned Ekurhuleni protests

"EMPD is aware that such gatherings can be exploited for criminal activities, including looting and public disorder," said Thepa.

The EMPD has intensified operational readiness across the City of Ekurhuleni ahead of a planned protest concerning undocumented foreign nationals on June 30.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, law enforcement agencies are prepared to ensure the protest remains peaceful while safeguarding public safety and protecting residents’ constitutional rights.

“EMPD is aware that such gatherings can be exploited for criminal activities, including looting and public disorder,” said Thepa. “Law enforcement will act decisively to ensure that no person infringes on the constitutional rights of another.”

The department said its primary objective is to facilitate lawful protest action while maintaining public order, enforcing the law and carrying out crime prevention duties.

Operational plans have been activated across all three regions of the city, with several identified hotspots set to receive increased police visibility. Officers will also be deployed to National Key Points, priority freeway routes and other strategic locations to monitor and respond to incidents.

Motorists are advised that temporary traffic disruptions may occur during the protest. The EMPD said updates, including alternative routes where necessary, will be communicated to the public.

The department also reminded residents that immigration enforcement remains the responsibility of authorised national authorities. Members of the public are warned not to take the law into their own hands by attempting to conduct immigration checks, profile individuals or enforce immigration legislation.

“Any such actions constitute a criminal offence, and perpetrators will face the full might of the law,” the department warned.

The EMPD added that vandalism of municipal infrastructure, intimidation and any actions intended to disrupt public order will not be tolerated.

Residents are encouraged to report criminal activity to the Bedfordview Call Centre on 011 999 1920, the Northern Regional Joint Operations Centre (JOC) on 011 999 9504, or the Southern Regional JOC on 011 999 5988.

The department said further coordination through its Operations and Specialised Services units will continue to ensure operational readiness and an effective response throughout the planned protest.
