Parents’ support key to SGB success in the running of Norkem

Norkem High elected its new SGB committee in April for the years 2015 to 2018

THE newly elected Norkem High School Governing Body (SGB) committee strives to create a centre of excellence out of the school.

The new SGB was elected in April and will represent the school for the years 2015 to 2018.

Mike Nkabinde, the SGB’s chairperson, emphasised the important role parents play in the SGB’s successful running of the school.

The committee has devised a ‘three-tier strategy’ plan that they hope will help the high school become the best education facility for its learners.

“Our key focus areas in 2015 will be, firstly, to ensure that teachers, support staff, learners, parents and business partners work collaboratively with government to turn the school into a thriving centre of excellence,” Nkabinde explained.

“The creation of healthy synergies with these immediate stakeholders, in closing the gap between parents and teachers, will be our main focus and we’ll be planning on drives that will assist us in bridging this critical gap.”

Secondly, the SGB believes that a school belongs to the whole community. It is imperative that members of the community become involved in the functioning of the school so that the future of learners can be shaped in the right way to prepare them to become responsible citizens of the country.

Therefore, the committee seeks to create communication channels between the institution and the community by inviting suggestions from learners, teachers and parents through the roll-out of the school’s suggestion box.

Thirdly, training will be made available to committee members so as to become a more efficient SGB.

According to Nkabinde, the training of new SGB members is vital and should take place soon after the elections so that members can carry out their duties from an informed point of view.

All these efforts will hopefully see a significant increase in the overall school performance, across all grades, including Grade 12.

“We believe that parents are interested in the education of their children, they are just not aware of the activities that give them the power in that respect. “Teams can produce fantastic results if they work together. But the experience can become unpleasant if there’s no cohesion.

“We therefore plead with all our stakeholders to be part of this new team. The SGB, school principal, educators and learners cannot do it on their own,” Nkabinde concluded.
