A suspect was arrested on Saturday evening, August 1, at around 8pm when he crashed into Norkem park CPF sector 2 chairman, Maritz Jonker’s car in Birchleigh North, and drove away.
The suspect was under the influence of crystal meth.
Ryno Opperman, reaction officer of MML security received a message on the Norkem CPF group earlier that day about a red stolen Mercedes Benz seen at a business in Lloyd Road from where metal was stolen.
A few hours later the car was back at the same location and MML security and Norken CPF patrollers set out to investigate.
“We were waiting outside the gates of the business and I heard a car coming around the corner very fast, the next moment the suspect in the red car came flying through the gates and almost hit one of the patrollers. I was still sitting in my car and kept thinking, if I don’t get out now I am going to die or be injured very badly. I opened the door and jumped out of the car, the red car missed me by centimetres but drove straight through my car,” said Jonker.
MML Security and CPF patrollers chased the suspect down to Partridge Avenue where one of the patrollers shot out the suspect’s tyres and he crashed into a tree.
“The suspect tried to run away and jumped over a nearby house’s palisades, that’s when we apprehended and arrested him,” said operational manager of MML security, Dewald Lategan.
“Further legal action will be taken against the suspect and we will press charges for attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving and property damage,” said Jonker.
Jonker’s car is written off but fortunately there were no injuries.
