DJ Gift hits the right note overseas

Thobani Mabuza’s music is receiving airtime on international radio stations.

Thobani, who is also known as DJ Gift, said he is a producer and an occasional DJ.

DJ Gift aka ‘Gift SA’ is sending his mix tapes to all four corners of the world and said that his work has been well received by international audiences.

Thobani said his music was played in Haiti after he emailed his work to Radio Toxic FM.

“In Africa I received airplay on RB2-Radio in Botswana. RB2-Radio sent me a message requesting permission to play my mix on their show called Fresh Mix Friday,” he said.

DJ Gift said his music was also recognised by 5FM when his mix was played on DJ Fresh’s show.

“On Ukhozi FM my mix was played in a show called Woza Nabangani. I am mostly popular in KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.

“For young and upcoming producers and DJ’s to be showcased on a national platform such as 5FM is an amazing opportunity. As you can well imagine, the amount of people that submit mixes is massive,” DJ Gift said.

“For someone like Thobani to have had a few mixes played on different shows, tells you that he is above the rest,” said Catherine Grenfell, a producer of The 5th Element on 5FM.

DJ Gift said his short term goal is to be a resident DJ at a radio station and in the long run he hopes to produce albums at his own record label and to host big events.

“My parents are very supportive. They help me to acquire more equipment and when my music plays on radio they listen and congratulate me,” said DJ Gift.
