A 34-year-old man was arrested for arson, which he allegedly committed in Moriting Section on Tuesday last week.
The Tembisa SAPS communications officer, Captain Manyadza Ralidzivha, said the man went to his sister’s house in Moriting Section.
“On arrival, he found his sister with her son. The suspect and his sister had an argument and he took his nephew inside the house. While there, the sister heard him boiling water.
“He poured the water on the floor and the woman called members of the community for help. The man locked himself inside the house together with his nephew. He also poured hot water over a resident who came to help,” he said.
Capt Ralidzivha said the man tried to strangled his nephew.
“The nephew overpowered him and jumped through an open window. The suspect poured paraffin inside the house and set it alight. Members of the community were called to extinguish the fire. He tried to run away from the scene. The community apprehended him and started assaulting him. He was rescued by policemen, who reacted swiftly to the scene. An arson case was opened,” said Capt Ralidzivha.
He said they are appealing to the community not to take the law into their own hands.
