Educator and coordinator for the event, Tinyiko Dzumba, said the aim of the event was to embrace different cultures represented at the school, as well as to celebrate diversity.

“As different as we are in our religions, cultures and beliefs, with the event we wanted to show that it’s possible to come together and showcase our uniqueness,” he explained.

Through dance, drama, and music, students took to the stage to represent their different cultures.

Foreign nationals present in the school were also represented including Ghana, Zimbabwe, Angola, and Congo.

No South African culture was left out of the festivities and the teachers assisted in putting the presentations together with the students, said Dzumba.

“It was a meaningful experience and with the teachers involvements it was a motivation to the learners.

Guests included officials from the head of the Department of Education, Ekurhuleni North, as well as different cultural groups, educators, and students of Sir Pierre.

Traditional foods were also shared.

“I never thought I would ever eat maotwana (chicken feet) with pap,” said Dzumba, who is of Tsonga culture.

Dzumba added that they planned to grow the event and learn from all the mistakes made this year.
