THE police on Thursday said the “minor statistical glitch”, resulting in car theft to be reflected at zero at all police stations in the annual crime statistics, had been rectified.
A statement issued read: “Shortly after the release of the annual crime statistics on Tuesday this week, the South African Police Service (SAPS) discovered that there were discrepancies with some of the statistics, particularly with regards to vehicle hijacking, vehicle theft and stock theft.

“These categories incorrectly reflected the figure zero (0) for a number of stations. But overall, the figures for the provinces were and remain correct.
“These discrepancies were as a result of a systematic error. A technical team comprising of statisticians and IT experts have since worked around the clock until 05:00 this morning (Thursday) and the problem was rectified.
“Now the nation at large and anyone with interest in the statistics can rest assured that the figures reflected in all crime categories on our system are correct and a true reflection of what happened and was captured. The SAPS apologises for any inconvenience this glitch may have caused.”

This figure shows a drop in each police precinct: Kempton down from 545 (April 2013 – March 2014) to 537 (April 2014 – March 2015), Norkem down from 505 to 402 and Sebenza down from 131 to 111.
