Boitumelong celebrates excellence
"We rewarded anybody who received 70 percent and more in a particular subject. We also have a top pupil per grade, who received a blazer and a scroll."
Boitutumelong Senior Secondary School rewarded its best performing pupils on October 16.
The entire school was gathered at the assembly for fellow pupils to witness their peers being recognised for their hard work.
The school’s principal, Mrs Sesi Makena, said the reason for the academic awards was to motivate pupils to achieve and perform better.
“We rewarded anybody who received 70 percent and more in a particular subject. We also have a top pupil per grade, who received a blazer and a scroll. If they are doing very well, we need to nurture the talent they have,” she said.
Mrs Makena said the awards were held to inspire pupils and urge them to acknowledge that education has a purpose, hence all the teachers were wearing their academic gowns to motivate pupils and let them see that education is powerful.
The school, which named MEC Panyaza Lesufi as a former pupil, holds the award ceremony annually and this year, they rewarded 285 pupils. Last year the school rewarded about 180 pupils.
Mrs Makena said these numbers included pupils who participated in sports.
“We have one of the best netball teams and the team has won many trophies for the school. We encourage extra mural activities.
“We understand that each pupil’s potential is different. Some are gifted academically and some are gifted physically, so we also acknowledge those who have participated in different sporting codes,” she said.
“I am happy and I would be even happier if my mother could have been here. I want to say to my fellow pupils to work hard to achieve,” said Happy Shishong, one of the top performing pupils.
