SCORES of cyclists supported the inaugural event of the Caxton Angels in Need Mountain Bike challenge on October 17.

The cycling challenge, which took place at the Modderfontein Reserve, was organised by Caxton’s East Rand branches, and led by the EXPRESS, Bedfordview and Edenvale News and Germiston City News.

The challenging sporting event was aimed at raising funds for Rare Disease South Africa, an organisation that provides advocacy for rare diseases in the country.

“This includes finding funds for research about diseases and promoting awareness about them. We also help the patients with medical aid issues. We support those families affected by rare diseases and also do research about the diseases diagnosed,” Toni Randall from Rare Disease SA, said.

She said there are about 2 000 diseases that are classified as rare diseases in South Africa and that a lack of awareness was the cause for many people dying.

“The lack of awareness is the main challenge. There are many people who are sitting with symptoms and do not know them. They sometimes find out too late. Sometimes people have to go to many doctors before they are diagnosed correctly,” Randall explained.

Annelie de Klerk, of EXPRESS, extended her appreciation to all those who participated in the challenge, as well as the sponsors of the event.

“I am thankful there were so many cyclists here doing it for the good cause. It means there are good people out there. People who are willing to cycle just for charity. I also feel enriched for being part of this,” she said.
