A suspect who has been on the run from police since last year, was arrested in Tembisa on Thursday following a high-speed chase.
The suspect was eventually cornered when the car in which he was travelling, collided with a wall.
Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said the pursuit started in Olifantsfontein at the intersection of Republic Road and the R562. Winnie Mandela Precinct officers sighted the man and on trying to apprehend him, he put the pedal to the metal. The police and JMPD officers joined the chase.
“He was cornered and arrested in Muntsu Section in Tembisa at around 1pm after his Merc’s front and rear tyres were shot out to immobilise the vehicle to avert further damage to property and for the protection of innocent road users,” Kgasago said.
The Mercedes Benz he was driving was stolen.
The 33-year-old male suspect skipped bail and failed to appear in court on two occasions in connection with a house robbery in November 2014 in Wierdabrug and another case involving the possession of a stolen vehicle in Tembisa in July 2014.
“He was booked in at Tembisa Police Station with the recovered stolen vehicle. He will face charges of reckless and negligent driving and failing to stop on the instruction of a police officer. With regards to the previous cases, arrangements are underway for him to appear in Pretoria (Wierdabrug) on a house robbery charge and again at Tembisa for possession of a stolen motor vehicle,” Kgasago said.
