A 36-year-old man was detained by the Ivory Park SAPS after he allegedly committed a house robbery in Kaalfontein Extension, near Ivory Park, on Monday.
The Ivory Park SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, said two suspects gained access to a shack after a couple had fallen asleep without locking the door.
“The suspects threatened the victims with a firearm and demanded money. The woman was paid an amount of R72 000 from the women’s club on Sunday. She managed to hide some of the money. The suspects took R16 000 and cellular phones,” said W/O Sekgobela.
W/O Sekgobela said the victim later identified one of the suspects as he stays in the same street.
“It is believed the identified suspect’s mother is a member of the women’s club. After the incident, the victim followed the suspects. The woman witnessed as one of the cellular phones, taken during the robbery, fell on the ground. She grabbed it and returned to her house,” said W/O Sekgobela.
According to W/O Sekgobela, the victim returned to the suspect’s house to demand her cash but the suspect said he was not one of the men who had robbed her..
A docket for house robbery was opened at the Ivory Park SAPS.
“The 36-year-old man was arrested but his accomplice is still on the run. The management of the Ivory Park SAPS is appealing to community members to not keep large amounts of cash in their homes but rather deposit the funds into bank accounts in order to avoid robberies. The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon,” said W/O Sekgobela.
