A sweet 16 party ended on a sad note when the father of the birthday girl, an off duty police officer, shot dead two robbers on Saturday at about 8:30pm on Pendoring street, Glen Marais.
According to provincial police spokesman, Capt Tsekiso Mofokeng, the sergeant is stationed at Benoni Flying Squad and cannot be named for his own safety.

“It is alleged four suspects entered the yard, some armed with firearms. They held up some of the guests attending the birthday party of his daughter (16). He managed to run into the house and took his service pistol while the suspects were trying to group all the visitors into one place in the yard,” explained Mofokeng.
“Shots were fired and the officer managed to shoot dead two suspects. The other two suspects managed to escape with a black bakkie, registration number unknown.”
Mofokeng said a friend of the policeman was injured during the shooting. He was taken to hospital for treatment. The officer suffered no injuries.
Police found 14 cartriges on the scene. No firearms were found in possession of the deceased suspects. A case of attempted armed robbery and an inquest had been opened at Kempton Park Police Station.
Investigations continue.
