The Adopt-a-School Foundation launched new ablution facilities at Mvelaphanda Primary School in Tembisa.
The investment is the result of construction company, Saint Gobain’s, 350th anniversary which celebrates 350 reasons to believe in the future.
They have partnered with the Adopt-a-School Foundation in order to meet one of Saint Gobain’s primary objectives, which is to use the company’s expertise to assist disadvantaged communities.
The new ablution facilities at Mvelaphanda will service over 1 700 pupils.
Prior to the development, the school had the use of only six functional, yet unsanitary toilets.
“This facility has already had an impact on our children. The facilities are clean and safe, and the children are proud to keep them that way. One never considers ablutions as an important part of a school but the dignity of our children is so important to their development and growth,” said Mr Mathava, the principal of Mvelaphanda Primary School.
Mvelaphanda Primary School is not the only school to benefit from these charitable celebrations.
Their R2,5-million investment has also included the construction of a classroom block at Sonwabo Primary School in the Western Cape and a feeding scheme kitchen to Inyonehlophe Secondary School in KwaZulu-Natal.
37 temporary construction jobs have been created for unemployed parents of pupils and there has been significant development and transfer of bricklaying, plastering and painting skills.
This is an integral part of the Adopt-a-School Foundation’s community centric building model, which empowers and builds a sense of ownership in the school communities.
Mr Peter Hindle, the Senior Vice-President at Saint-Gobain, thanked the Adopt-a-School Foundation for its excellent workmanship, the various other stakeholders involved in making the project a reality and the school for its commitment to providing quality education for the young children in Tembisa.
